When we say Fish Creek’s Winterfest is the most popular winter event in Door County, we’re not just saying that. For starters, Winterfest has all the great things everyone loves about festivals – live music, food and fireworks. But this longest-standing festival tradition also has some pretty quirky events that make Winterfest a Can’t Miss winter event on the peninsula!
For the 33rd year, Winterfest is the place to be for locals and visitors of Fish Creek with events and fun (ahem…minnow races and toilet seat tossing!) all taking place under a heated tent overlooking the frozen waters of Green Bay. This year Winterfest runs Jan. 31 through Feb. 2, with the main events on Saturday Feb. 1.
The main tent opens at 10am on Saturday with trolley rides, games, and the All Things Chocolate sale hosted by The Gibraltar Historical Society. The Smokin’ Hot Chili Cook-off starts at 11am – these chefs whip up some pretty impressive chilis. Think you have the best chili around? Sign up to enter the cook-off! Live music featuring Bacchus Lotus starts at 3pm and fireworks hit the sky at 5:45pm.
We’ll post a full schedule down below, but first we have to let you in on the most unique and everyone’s favorite part of Winterfest -- The Stumpf Fiddle contest. Now you might be wondering “What’s a Stumpf Fiddle?” A Stumpf Fiddle is also known as the Pogo Cello, the Devil’s violin and a Bladder and String – but it’s basically a stick with a resonation chamber, spring, wood block and other percussion instruments that you can bang or smash to make music. It’s usually homemade and can look and sound different depending on the individual who created it. It’s usually played as part of a folk, bluegrass or blues ensemble, but in Fish Creek, we highlight the Stumpf Fiddle solos!
The Stumpf Fiddle contest is uniquely Fish Creek, and one of the most talked about events at this great winter family event. Here’s a little preview of the amazing Stumpf Fiddle.
Want to join in on the fun? Sign up for our Stumpf Fiddle Contest and display your skills! Our 4th annual Stumpf Fiddle Contest, held Saturday afternoon during Winterfest, has two categories to delight the audience. The musical skills portion is for technical playing of the Stumpf Fiddle – this one is where all the pretty music happens. The second portion is the Dance and Style event for Stumpf Fiddle players to show off their amazing dance moves and unique style – this is when the show really heats up!
Round out the weekend with our Sunday morning Fruit Loop Run. This is a .49 mile fun run/walk for the whole family (animals too!) Awards are given to first place and best dressed so costumes definitely encouraged! Run starts at 10am from the main tent at Clark Park and travels through downtown Fish Creek with a pit stop at Karl’s Hydration Station and finishing along the shores of Green Bay. It’s free to participate (just sign up online), and you get a finisher’s sticker and bowl of Fruit Loops and milk when you’re done.
